Director : Hazel Zhang Short Film / Drama
This film explores the struggles of women, focusing on the distorted family dynamics between Meng and her mother, as well as the unrecognized romantic relationship between Meng and Yuan.
Meng lives in a seemingly harmonious family but constantly represses herself, unable to leave as she tries to compensate for her mother’s loss of a son. She represents the self-sacrifice of women in traditional family roles.
Meng’s mother, having lost her son early on, clings to her daughter as her only emotional support, developing an extreme need for control, symbolizing women who have lost their sense of self and live in fear.
Yuan, marginalized as a lesbian, lacks familial warmth after losing her mother and seeing her father remarry, leading her to leave home, embodying the loneliness and struggles of those on the fringes of society.
Through the fates of these three women, the film examines the common struggles women face within families and society, revealing the repression and emotional struggles of women in East Asian culture. This is not just a personal story, but a deep reflection on the broader tragedy of women.
